Better graphics and faster load times are fine, but the subtle effects that are imparted via the controller are something new — and something wonderful. And Astro shows that while Sony might excel at realistic and sometimes dark games, it’s also very capable of making a title that young kids can enjoy. So many little details throughout Astro’s Playroom make the DualSense exciting. On the first level, you’re going along a beach and can feel the steps you make in the sand. Each bit of grain is felt through your hand, which makes it intense in the best way. Take when you’re exiting the beach and you’re walking against the fans that are blowing sand across you. The microphone makes the wind more intense while the vibrations of the sand are felt as the controller feels like a sandstorm. Whether it’s the main menu with its signature Astro theme to celebrate the character, or CPU Plaza’s grandiose techno track and even Cooling Springs having a nice and cozy tune in its ice level.

Some players would describe this project as a tech demo for the PlayStation 5, and while it won’t be false, Astro’s Playroom is more than that. The game is broken down into multiple levels, and each one stands out in its unique way. This references the Castlevania series, specifically 1997’s Symphony of the Night on PS1, by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo. Puzzle Piece 3/4 – When crossing the tightrope while being blown to the side, jump over to the platform with the flower. Hit the flower to cause another tower to appear, which has this puzzle piece on it. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – From the next checkpoint, go to the left to find a cave area with this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 4/4 – Now instead of progressing upward from that puzzle piece, go to the right side of that monkey bar to reach another handhold up to the right, which drops the wall to the right.

Astro’s Playroom launched over four years ago, but developer Team Asobi has since released a few updates for the fan-favorite game. Astro’s Playroom lets you control Astro on a 3D platforming adventure across 4 different components of the PlayStation 5. You can go through Memory Meadow, a cloudy realm of wind and storms. Or visit the Cooling Springs, featuring a beach party setting and a surprise ice level later. You can also visit the GPU Jungle, which, as the name implies, is more of a jungle ruin to play around in, and the SSD Speedway with its neon sci-fi backdrop.

This includes all the aforementioned key areas of levels with physical mandatory controls, but also some minor elements that appear briefly through the game. Further mandatory physical interaction with the controller includes blowing into the microphone and flicking your finger to launch Astro like a slingshot. Whilst there are serious problems, I personally found these to have a workaround that made them doable.

The DualShock 3 was the PS3’s main controller, and the first PlayStation controller to be wireless (well, sort of; see below). It swaped the Analog button for the Home button, and had convex triggers for L2 and R2. Its primary new feature was SIXAXIS motion sensing that let you move and rotate the controller to control the game, a feature still in use today. The PSP Go was the smallest version of the PSP, removing the disc drive and having a screen that slid up to reveal the buttons underneath. Because the UMD drive was removed, the PSP Go could only play digital games, either downloaded from its PSN Store or transferred via a PlayStation 3. It also coudln’t use the Camera, Microphone or GPS peripherals without an adapter.

Upon touching the fourth starfish, you’ll come across the special bot, and the clue for the riddle — an arrow following a specific route. To solve the riddle, jump up to the circular platforms above this area, where on the far side, you’ll see a little clock on the column.

Astro’s Playroom launches November 12th, bundled with the PlayStation 5. First, progress through the level until you get to the controller cable tight-rope walk to the first Checkpoint, which you’ll do after crossing an island with strong winds. You don’t have to actually cross the tight-rope, but you do need to extend it since you can’t do that whilst carrying something. Holding the square for a long while will charge a special rotating attack.

While hunting for realistic depictions of PlayStation systems or spotting a robot wearing the costume of a beloved PlayStation mascot may stick out, it all feels of apiece with Astro’s charming overall design. Running at a smooth 4K 60fps, Astro’s world may not be massive and require huge draw distances or populate the screen with hundreds of enemies, but it’s certainly pretty. Natural environments come together with PS5 internal parts and other pieces of hardware in a beautiful blend of the environmental with the technological.

Each represents a VIP Bot from Astro Bot, and can be found in the Mission Control Room of the new Labo Basement area once you’ve freed them. They will only appear after you’ve unlocked and completed 1994 Throwback. If for some reason you don’t like blowing into your controller’s microphone, just turn it off. When you encounter a windmill in the game, the interaction will start automatically.
